Somerset has 'everything you need' for a UK holiday

With miles of rugged coastline, rolling countryside and charming villages right on their doorstep, it's not hard to see why every year millions of Brits shun overseas getaways in favour of holidays in the UK.

And one destination that has always been popular with holidaying Brits is the south-west county of Somerset. Nestled in the heart of the West Country, Somerset is a destination which offers an exciting mix of dramatic coastline, seaside resorts, stunning English countryside and places of historic interest.

"Somerset's got everything you want or need in a British holiday destination - city, coast and countryside, all in one place that's great value and easy to get to," says Bob Smart, coordinator at the Somerset Tourism Association. "And don't forget the Cheddar cheese, cider and strawberries."

Indeed, it is undeniable that one of the great things about this county is that it boasts some delicious local produce and there are a number of food festivals and markets open throughout the years celebrating the fruits of the land.

But if you'd rather don a waterproof jacket and some walking boots and get some fresh air on your Somerset holiday, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy, such as cycling, horse-riding and hiking in the beautiful countryside.

Or if you fancy soaking up some culture, why not visit some of Somerset's creative businesses, where traditional crafts such as ironmongery, pottery, thatching and carving are still used?

Although there is a range of accommodation choices offered throughout Somerset including hotels, camping and B&Bs, Mr Smart believes that the best way to experience the county is to stay in a cottage in the countryside.

"A cottage stay is the real way to discover the real Somerset," he says."Surrounded by beautiful countryside, you've got no-one to please but yourselves.  It's a whole new way of life."
